Reading Alone in Berlin you're brought into the life of a normal working-class Berlin Family, trying desperately to survive unnoticed under the cruel Nazi regime. This exceptional story, based on fact and expertly translated, heartbreakingly describes the everyday struggle of a common Berlin couple and how, after the death of their only son on the battle field, they begin their own war against Hitler and his empire. I enjoyed this book immensely, sympathised with the characters and in the end, fought for them - willed them to survive - this book will remain in my top five for a long time, I'm sure.
