Recommended by LaszloThroughout the ages there have been numerous individuals whose exceptional lives have been a demonstration of the unlimited potential that lies in the heart of every human being. But few have achieved greater purity and virtuousness in both their private and public affairs than Mahatma Gandhi. His indomitable spirit and moral fortitude shine through every page of this book. It is little surprise that millions admired him, loved him, and tried to follow in his footsteps.
A decent portion of this book, written by Louis Fischer who had been fortunate to meet Gandhi several times, covers Gandhi's tireless struggle against British rule in India, and while the account of this struggle is fascinating and at times more exciting than any drama, for me the most rewarding parts were those which provided an invaluable insight into Gandhi's own life. The descriptions of the inner strength and discipline with which he lived every day of his life, the principles upon which he based his whole existence, the wisdom, love and understanding with which he guided the people of India towards freedom and self-improvement, are truly inspirational.
Reading this book caused me to re-evaluate certain things in my own life, reshaped my thinking in many ways, and even made me change my diet! Such is the influence of this giant little man, and of this book, even decades after Gandhi's death. This was the book that inspired Sir Richard Attenborough to make his widely-acclaimed epic movie on Gandhi's life, and if you think the movie is good, read the book also. It's so much more enriching.
