Fionnbarra O'Dochartaigh was born in The Bogside, Derry, in 1944. His primary education was with the Christian Brothers and he continued his studies at the Londonderry Technical College, University College of Cork, Manchester Ploytechnic, Magee College, and the Open University. He is best known in the media as a topical historian and social commentator. His best-known work,Ulster's White Negroes - From Civil Rights to Insurrection, is considered a classic. Since 1988, he has been the editor of Ar nDuthcas, The Doherty Clan newspaper. He currently plays a privotal role in commemorating the Great Hunger of the last century.
