The saying goes that if you remember the sixties you probably weren't there. But I do and I was. Most of these pictures are from that decade. Though at first glance, not only do they seem like something from a different era - they seem like something from a different planet.
These are stills. They won't talk to you like the ones on the picture phone and they are definitely not going to move. You can't click a mouse on them and make them come alive, but here they are, ninety or so images of what was my own living and working world four decades ago.
Some pictures show worldwide legends like Muhammad Ali, or The Beatles who came to see us and went away again. All were talented and talent endures. Look at Twink, Vincent Browne, Rosaleen Linehan, and Mary Kenny. Some were "big in the fifties" but got lost in the sixties. Some belonged to the theatre and the variety world but did not quite adjust to the newer medium of television. But they all belonged to this world, this past planet.
What strikes me is that some of the people in these pictures are now moving to the margins of our memory. The sad truth is that there are now probably two generations who haven't heard of them. We're up against time in these photographs. And it's no harm to be reminded of those people who nurtured the infant television service over forty years ago.
