[9780956655844]
by Dermot Poyntz
In 1689 James Stewart, King of England, Ireland and Scotland was deposed by William of Orange in an event known as the Glorious Revolution. James fled to his cousin in France, Louis XIV, the most powerful monarch in Europe. Aided by Louis, James was sent back to Ireland with supplies and arms in a bid to reclaim his throne. He landed in Kinsale on the 12th March 1689 but the hope this inspired in Irish Catholics quickly faded as the campaign floundered in a series of disastrous battles culminating in the Battle of the Boyne. James again fled to France.
