Unlike most people who pick up this book I haven't read The Shadow of the Wind, the author's highly successful and much-acclaimed previous novel. After reading The Angel's Game, I certainly will, though.
The Angel's Game seduced me with its beautiful front cover, the eerily intriguing blurb on the back, and its beautifully written first page. But there's much more here than just the first page to mesmerise the reader; I savoured every sentence of this dark, gothic tale, and at times forced myself to put the book down and mull over the countless wonders I discovered on its pages.
The Shadow of the Wind is now sitting on my shelf, waiting to be read. But it would be a mistake to just rush to it and devour its pages. Like a good wine, let it ripen and gather dust for a while. I will come to it when I cannot wait any longer, and it will taste all the sweeter for the time I have spent craving for it.
