This 140 page book is a tribute to man's determination to communicate despite huge obstacles. Jean-Dominique was the successful editor-in-chief of French Elle, a 44 year old father of two children who suffered a massive stroke. He was left completely paralysed, speechless and only able to move one eyelid. With this as his only method of communication he dictated this amazing book.
The book takes us through his struggle to make sense of what has happened to him. His body may be frozen but his mind is free like a butterfly to travel the world of his imagination. He recounts heartbreaking yet sometimes funny incidents that happen around and to him in his hospital room. He also recounts aspects of his life prior to the accident.
Jean-Dominique has the gift of painting pictures with words. His descriptions of the Hospital and locality around it are so vivid you feel you are there with him. His vivid descriptions also highlight how badly some people treat those who cannot "speak" for themselves while the best in humanity is displayed unconsciously by others.
During his short illness he set up "The Association du Locked-In-Syndrome '' to highlight the issues facing other patients in similar circumstances to him.
This book made me (for a short time anyway) appreciate the things in life I take for granted - being able to wipe my nose, swallow my saliva etc. etc.
