Clifden was founded by John D'Arcy, in 1812, in what was then one of the most isolated and inaccessible regions in the whole of the island of Ireland. During the two centuries since, the town has experienced good times and bad; times of hope and endeavour, and also times of famine and great distress. This anthology of extracts, taken from the writings of visitors with a wide range of interests, paints a picture of the growing town and its surroundings, before rapid transport and vastly improved systems of communication, overcame this isolation.
