It is a delight to see McCullough's polyvocal talents at play as he conjures the promiscuous, transitory beauty of the Brighton area. The title suggests airiness, but this would be to simplify the sense of elegant suspension which results from the author’s willingness to share the task of ascribing meaning with his readers. He has the confidence to let change and movement dictate the flow of his words.
Whether writing of clouds themselves, or earthier impressions that flash by like scenes viewed from the window of the Brighton Express, McCullough combines a naughty sense of humour with a childlike awe which is honed rather than diluted by his intellect and lyrical flexibility.
This is observational poetry at its refreshing and tender best, leaving the reader envigorated by a lasting sense of light, colour and movement.
