For The Love of Ireland's Buildings

by Michael Lunt

A personal selection by artist Michael Lunt of over 120 drawings and paintings from fifty years of the Roadstone Calendar, reflecting the artist's love of Ireland's buildings and engineering in our towns and landscapes.

The main content of the book is divided into six geographic sections round the island of Ireland.

Dublin City and County

(eg Dublin Castle, Georgian houses, Trinity College buildings, Heuston Station, West Pier and Town Hall, Dun Laoghaire, Sorrento Terrace, Killiney)
The East and Southeast

(eg Russborough House, Wicklow, Tholsel, Kilkenny, Hook Head, Wexford, Mount Congreve, Waterford)
Cork City and the Southwest

(eg The Maltings, Cork, Quayside shops, Cobh, Skellig Michael, Kerry)
Centre and Mid-West

(eg Stone cottage, Clare, Shops fronts, Ennistymon, The Granary, Limerick, Rock of Cashel, Tipperary)
The West and Northwest

(Dun Guire, Galway, Renvyle House and Killary Harbour, Galway, Museum of Country Life, Mayo, Bridge over the Shannon, Roscommon)
The North and Northeast

(eg Dry Dock, Belfast, Boyne Viaduct, Louth, Newgrange, Meath)

The art ranges from images of ancient and Early Christian remains such as Dun Aengus stone fort on Aran and Skellig Michael in Kerry through some of Ireland's most stunning castles and unique tower houses (King John's in Limerick, Enniskillen Castle, Glenveagh in Donegal, Carrickfergus in Antrim and Ballyhack in Wexford), prominent churches (eg Cobh's St Colman's, the tallest in Ireland, the white limestone-clad St Finbarr's Cathedral in Cork)) and beautiful eighteenth- and nineteenth-century architecture to attractive town shopfronts, atmospheric workers' cottages, key places of work (some now lost in time such as the Dublin gasworks' building) and notable engineering projects, including lighthouses, harbours, piers, sea walls, bridges and dry docks.

The focus is on the outside of these structures, capturing them in moments through the decades, from 1961, in media of varied styles.
