Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is an empathy deficient disorder. Individuals with NPD learn to mimic the emotions of others, mirroring their positive attributes. Abusers wear a mask in order to blend into society and appear normal. In reality, they are neither inhibited by morals or ethics, never showing guilt nor remorse for their devious actions.
Empathic individuals are a prime target for narcissistic abuse, due to a kind and forgiving nature. In narcissistic romantic relationships, a once seemingly ideal partner can suddenly change, becoming abusive. Victims naturally find themselves confused by their ordeal, unaware of the full extent of the abuse.
Due to excessive levels of stress, health problems are inevitable - both trauma and abuse have a detrimental effect on the human brain. Long-term exposure to narcissistic abuse is known to cause neurological damage. Despite the pervasiveness of narcissistic abuse within Irish society, there are few, if indeed any, support networks available for those abused.
The Author Mike Flannery has a series of oil paintings, documenting this relationship dynamic. Using two central characters: a teddy bear to portray the empathic abused and a cuddly dragon as their romantic narcissistic abuser. The paintings span all areas of NPD abuse, covering topics from gaslighting to baiting.
In this book, To Grin and Bear – Alternative Self-Help for Alternative Minds, blending these paintings with words of wisdom, words which come from a place of understanding. To Grin and Bear aims to bring awareness about this commonplace form of abuse, and most importantly to demonstrate that healing from a narcissistic abusive relationship is possible.
