Knowth: A Guide

by Edel Bhreathnach

ISBN: 9781802050158

Knowth, Co. Meath, has had a long, though not continuous, history of ritual, settlement and habitation that spans some six millennia, from the beginning of the Neolithic to the modern era. It is a national monument. Since 1993 it has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage Property: the ancient Brú na Bóinne cemetery complex that also includes Dowth and Newgrange; and from 2023 part of the Boyne Valley (Brú na Bóinne) National Park. The Neolithic passage tombs at Knowth date to approximately 3200 bc, making them older than the Egyptian pyramids and older than the Stonehenge monument. The first evidence we have for activity at Knowth, however, is even older than the passage tombs—clusters of pits and at least three structures, suggested by foundation trenches, post-holes and hearths or fireplaces, dated to c. 3700/3600 bc
