Three Bridges : A Comicbook from Limerick City

by Hugh McMahon

Three Bridges is a forty-page black and white comic book hand drawn in ink by local artist Hugh McMahon. It tells the story of a girl and her grandad spending an afternoon walking the three bridges in Limerick City. The street scenes and landmarks will be immediately recognisable to anyone familiar with Limerick City. The story begins at the bus stop on O Connell Street and takes in a circuitous route over Sarsfield Bridge, Thomond Bridge and Shannon Bridge. The action centres around a young girl who playfully explores the city and her watchful grandfather keeping an eye and guiding her around the streets and parks. Many of the incidents were inspired by real life events which occurred when the artist was sketching around the city. There is a swan on the bridge blocking traffic, children playing on the cannons on Castle Parade and tourists knocking on the door of King Johns Castle.

Three Bridges was produced during the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. During this time, the three bridges walk has become a popular activity for many people in the city. This comic book features many of the streetscapes and landmarks of the three bridges walk and will be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates the architecture and character of Limerick City.
