The Notetakers takes its title from the name given to a special squad of Detectives within the Dublin Metropolitan Police, officially known as G Division at the turn of the last century. Based in Dublin Castle these officers were tasked with both intelligence gathering and monitoring all dissident groups. The section could aptly be described as the forerunner to what we now term as Special Branch. The story is set against the backdrop of looming rebellion, shifting loyalties, and beneath-the-surface intrigue. The novel weaves together the lives of both historical and fictional characters as they navigate the tensions and intrigue in the months leading up to the Easter Rising.
At the heart of the novel is Sean Maguire, a tough, resourceful, complex Dubliner in his mid-twenties who returns home to evade conscription into the British Navy. In his efforts to stay off radar, he becomes entangled in Dublin's criminal underworld, working for the formidable Edy Barrett - known as the Princess - who controls the city's largest brothels in the infamous Monto district. His association with Barrett unwittingly draws him into the orbit of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) as they prepare for the uprising. Matters are further complicated when he rekindles a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Amy Dalton, who now works for Barrett, placing both in grave danger.
Running parallel to this storyline is Detective Inspector Daniel Barton, the elusive and enigmatic head of G Division. Through an informant, he becomes aware that the IRB is planning a major uprising. His efforts to uncover details are hampered by the necessity to conceal his discovery from British Military Intelligence, which controls security in Great Britain and Ireland during the First World War. Added to this is another layer of intrigue in the form of a character known only as The Apiarist - a fictional IRB leader who secretly feeds information to Barton in a vein attempt at shielding the true scale of the rebellion.
The novel also incorporates real historical figures – most notably, Patrick Pearse, Seán Mac Diarmada, Thomas Clarke and James Connolly - as they orchestrate the Rising whilst deceiving their own allies as to the true scale of their plans.
