University of Limerick An Oral History

by Martin Walsh

A handsome hardcover book, illustrated throughout with a wide range of period and recent photographs. A must for anyone who has attended the college in the half century since it was established on Shannonside.

The Department of History, University of Limerick and the Oral History Project are delighted to present ‘University of Limerick An Oral History, 1972 – 2022’. Authored by UL alumnus Dr Martin Walsh, it tells the social history of the campus from the early days of campaigns for a university for Limerick in the 1960s, to the establishment of NIHE and the National College of Physical Education, later Thomond College of Education, to the granting of university status on NIHE in 1989.

It is based on the oral history testimonies gathered at the University of Limerick over the past fifteen years from those who campaigned for a university, and those that worked and studied on campus over the past fifty years. It includes accounts from students, campaigners, staff and all those involved in the establishment and development in this key educational institution.

The book is a story of personal and collective triumphs, setbacks and challenges that have made the University of Limerick what it is today.
