Voices from the Irish Free State

by Eoin & Niamh O Dochartaigh Editors

In its 260 pages and over 150 images it showcases selected essays from a rare old book ‘The Voice of Ireland’. which was published in 1923-24, when the journalist/author W.G. Fitzgerald had collected a wide variety of contributions for his volume, at a critical juncture in Irish History. In this new publication the editors have added detailed profiles of 38 of these selected authors, with a large collection of old photographs. Among the authors you will find essays by notable politicians, poets, historians and academics of the early 1900s and some 10 women activists of that era are featured. As some names had slipped into the mists of time, we were determined to revive and to honour these memories of their well-lived lives, at times heroic, harsh and sad at the terror and tragedy of it all. The essays are also innovative and stirring, whether on the language revival, the Arts and Irish theatre or the influential part of women in political life.
