This book reveals for the first time many of the letters written to and by the Presidents of Ireland over more than eight decades to the present day. Social history, the arts, politics, the Irish language, women in Irish society, Northern Ireland, the Irish diaspora, letters from children, and Ireland's place on the world's stage will all feature.
Reproductions of the letters will be accompanied by a small selection of photographs which will bring to life not only the Presidencies but also Áras an Uachtaráin and those who have lived there and visited.
Each thematic chapter will include an introductory essay by one of the well known contributors, e.g., RTE’s David McCullough on politics, author Joseph O’Connor on the arts, Caitriona Crowe on women, Samantha Barry on the Irish Diaspora, Lise Hand on the many visitors to the Aras.
The letters will have popular and critical appeal, covering subjects as varied as crises of government and ‘the Emergency’ to poet Patrick Kavanagh’s bad behaviour during a visit to the Aras. They will show Ireland’s small but mighty place on the world stage and the changing attitudes of Irish citizens -- young and old -- towards their nine presidents. And they will explore, accessibly and with respect, how the individual agendas of each of our presidents defined eras and strengthened the relationship between them and all who identify as Irish.
