The Artist's Room

by Jo Slade

The series of poems, The Artist's Room is based on the life and work of the painter Gwen John (1876-1939). Gwen John is recognised as one of the finest and most influential painters of her generation. She was born in Haverfordwest, Wales and died in Dieppe, France, aged 63. She attended the Slade School of Fine Art, London. She worked as an artist's model and spent most of her working and painting life in Paris. During her years in Paris she lived at many different addresses, settling finally at, 8 rue Babie Meudon, outside Paris. She modelled for Auguste Rodin and became his lover. She posed for the sculpture The Whistler Muse. After Rodin's death in 1917 she focused solely on her painting. She converted to Catholicism and led a life of devotion to her art.
