The loss of Yellowhammers

by John D. Kelly

The title poem of this splendid debut collection conflates the aging body of the poet's grandfather with the colour yellow from a range of allusions, all in the service of compassion and revelation.

It is a gesture characteristic of this work which is driven by humanist values, by a deep reverence for and understanding of the natural world and, in elegies and planxties, a loving heart for family and friends.

There is a painter's eye at work in how John D. Kelly composes a scene and there is a keen ear for the music of his borderland home to keep the whole adventure on an even keel.

Water, and all that lives on, in and with it, is as crucial as the land and it's creatures, (including us human creatures), to the energy these poems generate and transmit. It is high voltage with a marvellous charge and leaves us, as he intimates himself in the last short poem, as if waiting for the lightnings of a song-thrush to strike. - Paula Meehan
